Process
If you would like me to work with you as a writer or editor, please contact me for a no-cost, obligation-free initial consultation, either by phone or in person. Once we decide to proceed, here’s how it usually works:
Based on the nature of the project, I will draw up a simple letter of agreement that includes the work to be done, the time frame, the cost, and any other items related to the successful completion of the work. Once you have signed this, I will proceed with the project.
For editing, clients usually e-mail me their document and I edit it electronically using Microsoft Word’s “Reviewing Tool” that allows the author to see all changes I have made and to accept or reject them. It also allows me to ask questions and make comments to which you can respond. If you don’t have access to this program, I can devise other ways we can work together.
Once I have completed my work, I return the document to you via e-mail or on disk to give you the opportunity to review it. I will work with you until the final product meets your satisfaction.
Cost
The cost of a project varies depending on the nature and extent of the work. For fairly straight-forward, time-limited jobs, such as copyediting and proofreading, I charge by the hour. For more complex work, I prefer to charge a flat fee, so you know exactly what it will cost you. You will not pay more, except if you make significant changes to the project once editing is underway.
Writing — The fee depends on the nature of the work and includes all aspects of the job from research and interviews to the actual writing, editing and revisions. It does not include travel. Cost can range from a couple of hundred dollars for a brief personal profile to several thousand dollars for a book-length project.
Editing
Copyediting and proofreading US$35 per hour
Substantive and developmental editing US$50 per hour
Payment — For hourly payment jobs, I will invoice you upon completion of the project. For larger, flat-fee projects, 50% is to be paid before I begin work and 50% upon completion. Payment can be made directly into my bank account or via Paypal. I will invoice you and issue a receipt. Payment is to be made within 30 days.
